Brief Description

Even today, there are still significant gaps in knowledge and differing mechanical models regarding the lateral force and torsional capacity of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete members. This type of stress often poses a computational challenge, particularly when verifying the design of existing bridges in light of increased heavy-duty traffic.

To further clarify open questions in this field, the Roads System Research Institute (BASt) has announced the research project “FE 89.0350—Assessment of Current Design Approaches for Torsion with Bending and Shear Based on National and International Test Results,” in which all torsion tests available worldwide are to be cataloged in a database in order to review current national and international design approaches and to develop recommendations for the application of the mechanical model specified in DIN EN 1992. The work is intended to form the Fundamentals for

  • discussions on the validation of the National Annex to the future Eurocode 2, which is currently available as a draft, as well as
  • discussions regarding load-carrying capacity reserves in the context of the verification of existing bridge structures.

Through participation in the “ACI 445-0E Shear & Torsion-Torsion” working group of the North American Concrete Institute (ACI), the results are coordinated and discussed at the international level.
