The Family Service is the first point of contact at HAW Kiel for questions regarding the compatibility of family and studies or family and career. The term "family" refers to all living arrangements in which people care for one another. At the university, family is perceived as a sensitive area of life worthy of protection, which forms the basis for individuals to succeed in their studies and work.

- Students and employees can make an appointment with the Family Service by telephone or e-mail.
- Counselling is strictly confidential.
- Counselling can take place in person or by telephone on request.

- Exchange and events on topics such as studying with children, caring for relatives, reconciling family responsibilities with studies or work
- Organization of the vacation programme for children of students and staff at HAW Kiel
- Communicating the topic of reconciling family and studies/work to all levels and departments of the university
- Increasing the visibility of compatibility issues through campaigns such as the vacation program, information events for employees, presentation of the family service at university events, at first semester welcome events and on the university's social media channels HAW Kiel
- Cooperation with internal and external bodies for a high level of visibility
- HAW Kiel has been a member of the Familie in der Hochschule association since 2025.
- Through the cooperation of numerous universities in German-speaking countries, the compatibility of family and studies or career is promoted by establishing and expanding location-based measures.
- HAW Kiel's Family Service is entrusted with this task at an operational level and is strategically supported by university management.
- Since 2014, the HAW Kiel has held the family-friendly university certificate.
- The third re-auditing process took place in 2023. The HAW Kiel has held the certificate with distinction since then, which recognizes the sustainable commitment to family-friendly study and working conditions.
- The latest certificate is valid until 2026.
