Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sven Liebisch holds the Chair of Hydraulic Engineering at the Institute of Civil Engineering and heads the "Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory." As a trained hydraulic engineer, he is responsible for all water-related modules in the “Civil Engineering” program, such as hydromechanics, water resources management and hydraulic engineering, river engineering and flood control, coastal engineering, Structural Hydraulic Engineering, Special Topics in Hydraulic Engineering and Coastal Protection, Municipal Water Management, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, and Rainwater Management.
He also serves as chair of the examination committee at the Institute of Civil Engineering.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sven Liebisch first studied civil engineering with a focus on hydraulic engineering at what was then the HAW Nordostniedersachsen in Suderburg (now Ostfalia) and subsequently worked for nearly five years at the Kassel Regional Council, at the Bad Hersfeld branch office in the field of water supply and groundwater protection. During this time, he completed an additional master’s degree in hydraulic engineering at Leibniz University Hannover and subsequently took a position as a research assistant in the “Hydromechanics and Coastal Engineering” at the Leichtweiß Institute for Hydraulic Engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig. There, he also earned his Ph.D. in the field of coastal engineering. Since then, his research has focused on experimental studies in coastal engineering, particularly on the loads acting on coastal protection structures. As part of his doctoral work, he investigated the design of open-pored, bound revetments through experiments on scaled hydraulic models. The focus was on reducing wave run-up and wave-induced loads through the use of porous revetments, as well as investigating the interaction between the revetment and the sandy subgrade.
After completing his doctorate, he moved to the Ludwig-Franzius Institute for Hydraulic Engineering, Estuarine and Coastal Engineering at Leibniz University Hannover, where he served as a senior engineer and headed the “Coastal Engineering” research group.
In early 2019, he assumed the professorship in Hydraulic Engineering at HAW Kiel. There, he serves as director of the Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory.
