Prof. Dr. Brigitte Wotha is a professor of spatial planning with a focus on urban and regional development and sustainable mobility. Together with her team, she supports the Executive Board on issues related to mobility development (Mobility at HAW Kiel | HAW Kiel). She also oversees the GenderArchland network for gender perspectives in spatial planning (GenderArchland | HAW Kiel). At the same time, she is an honorary professor of applied geography at Kiel University (CAU).

    Prof. Dr. Wotha has been teaching and conducting research as a professor at Kiel University of Applied Sciences (FH Kiel / HAW Kiel) in the Department of Civil Engineering since March 2020, and as an honorary professor at the Department of Geography at Kiel University (CAU) since 2012.

    As a geographer, Brigitte Wotha has worked at various universities, for the city of Kiel, and for a Member of the European Parliament. She earned her doctorate from the CAU in 2000. In addition to her work at the universities, she owned a planning office in Strande near Kiel that had a focus on rural areas, village development, and European structural programs.

    Her research focuses on spatial transformations, sustainable mobility, rural regional development, and gender planning. From 2023 to 2025, she served as a member of the Expert Commission for the Federal Government’s 4th Gender Equality Report on the topic of socio-ecological transformation, as well as a member of the Advisory Board on “Gender-Equitable Urban Development: Potential for Sustainable and Diverse Cities” as part of the “Experimental Housing and Urban Development” (ExWoSt) research program commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Construction (BMWSB) and the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs, and Spatial Development (BBSR). Brigitte Wotha is an active member of the Academy for Spatial Development of the Leibniz Association and the Academy for Rural Areas of Schleswig-Holstein.
