Prof. Dr. Alois Steiner holds the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering in Hydraulic Engineering at the Institute of Civil Engineering within the Department of Media and heads the "Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory." As a civil engineer and geoscientist by training, he is responsible for all geotechnical modules in the bachelor’s program in “Civil Engineering,” including Soil Mechanics, Public Works Engineering / Ground Mechanics, Special Civil Engineering, and Special Topics in Hydraulic Engineering and Coastal Protection, as well as for the master’s program “Climate-Resilient Planning and Construction,” including Geotechnical Engineering & Numerical Modeling and Offshore Geotechnics & Climate Change.

In addition, he serves as the internationalization coordinator for the Institute of Civil Engineering (domestic and international) and as the program director for the master’s program “Climate-Adaptive Planning and Construction.”

    Prof. Dr. Alois Steiner first studied civil engineering with a focus on geotechnical engineering at Graz University of Technology (Austria) and subsequently conducted research for nearly two and a half years in the fields of rock mechanics and tunnel construction. He then worked at the engineering firm ILF Beratende Ingenieure in Rum near Innsbruck in the field of terrestrial and marine geotechnical engineering and gained extensive experience abroad (e.g., in the United Arab Emirates, Greece, Italy, etc.). He then accepted a position as a research assistant at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen. There, he earned his Ph.D. in marine geotechnical engineering.

    After completing his doctorate, he joined KURT FREDRICH Spezialtiefbau GmbH in Bremerhaven and assumed technical leadership of the engineering office.

    Since September 2022, he has held the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering in Hydraulic Engineering at HAW Kiel. There, he serves as the head of the geotechnical engineering laboratory.
