Free Mover

"Free movers" are students who do not study abroad at a partner university but apply independently to a university abroad.

Students who take this route must take a particularly high degree of personal responsibility and initiative and start planning very early to avoid missing any application deadlines. Tuition fees are usually charged. Even in Europe, it cannot be taken for granted that free movers will be accepted for a semester abroad and that studies will be free of charge.

In contrast to the exchange study places offered by HAW Kiel, it is important for free mover stays to address the issue of recognition of study achievements abroad with the responsible international representative of the department in good time and to secure this through the Learning Agreement .

Where, when and how do I apply?

As a free mover, you research a suitable university, the application deadline, the range of courses on offer, the recognition of credits at HAW Kiel and other modalities yourself. There are a number of organizations that can help you find study places, e.g. Fulbright Commission (USA) or GOstralia!, GOmerica! (Australia/ New Zealand/USA). Please ask us at the International Office.

Free movers should still register in our Mobility Online Portal.

Is there any financial support?

Free movers going to a university outside Europe can apply for funding through the PROMOS scholarship. Please use the above link to Mobility Online to apply. Please contact the International Office at HAW Kiel for further information.

You can find out which other external organizations you can apply to for funding here.
