Central Student Advisory Service
Applications, enrolment, and other requests are handled by the Student Affairs Department, which includes Student Information Services, the Student Registry Office, and the Admissions Office. You can find information about the services offered by the Central Student Advisory Service on this page.
The Central Student Advisory Service at Kiel University of Applied Sciences supports prospective and current students with questions and decisions related to their studies. Whether you need help choosing the right degree programme, changing programmes, exploring career prospects, or dealing with individual challenges during your studies, we offer competent, independent and confidential advice.
Our aim is to work with you to develop suitable solutions and perspectives. All consultations are, of course, subject to professional confidentiality.
For personal advice, we are happy to arrange an appointment, either on campus or online. A brief initial telephone consultation can help clarify your questions, identify the right contact person, or arrange an appointment.
Individual counselling is recommended if you question your choice of subject, if you have difficulties in managing your work or you suffer from examination anxiety and lack motivation.
Should the increasingly complex course offer provided at German institutes of higher education rather confuse you or should you be uncertain about your study wishes resp. study opportunities (especially at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences), a thorough individual subject information session is recommended.
The study guidance service will inform you about opportunities for funding of outstanding students and how to apply for a scholarship. During the interdisciplinary weeks (IdW) a regular information service is offered.
We offer individual counselling as well as lectures and seminars which are embedded in our everyday study operations informing you on how to prevent examination anxiety and burn-out.
Under the framework of school conferences and in cooperation with the Media Dome and our faculties, the event series Campus+ offers the exclusive opportunity to explore the Kiel the University of Applied Sciences. Additionally, we organise open days (Fachhochschulinfotage – FIT) twice a year and provide information for the interested public at professional (higher) education fairs and school events.
The study guidance service aims at reducing your individual difficulties arising during your course of study. We offer, for example, support and events on “how to learn” for those students who find it more difficult to learn after a longer period of professional work. These problems may also concern students with migrant background, students with children and students suffering from chronic diseases/disabilities. Should you need further support, we would be pleased - if requested - to offer assistance provided by partners at or from outside the university.

Further counselling services
- Only the Admissions Office can provide legally binding information on all matters relating to your application or admission. It also provides information about the degree programmes available at Kiel University of Applied Sciences.
- Social counselling on topics such as social benefits (e.g. child benefit and housing benefit), health insurance, basic information about BAföG (student financial aid), and student employment is provided by the Student Life Team at Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein. During the lecture period, open drop-in consultation hours are held every Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Room 106, Building C8, on the HAW Kiel campus. No appointment is necessary. Individual appointments can also be arranged by email at beratung.ki@studentenwerk.sh.
- Psychological counselling for students is provided by Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein. Upon request, an appointment can also be arranged on the HAW Kiel campus in Room 106, Building C8.
- For students and graduates, the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) offers advice on career planning, professional development and job applications.
- Telephone consultation hours:
- Tuesday: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- Wednesday and Thursday: 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- Thursday: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- In-person consultations: On the first and third Thursday of each month, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Building C23, Room 1.16.
- The Family Service Office provides information about support options for students with caregiving responsibilities.
- The Office for Student Financial Aid (BAföG) can be reached by telephone at 0431 8816-400 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
