First-year students

This page provides important information and an overview of the initial dates for your studies:

Your program begins with the welcome event for first-year students and a "Programming" pre-course (see below for details). Regular classes for the 2026 winter semester start on September 14, 2026. You can view the lecture schedule to get an overview of course times and locations, and consult the module database for an overview of course contents. Please check your email regularly, as we will use this channel to send you further information regarding the start of the semester.

The first important date for students on the Master's degree program in Data Science is the welcome event. We look forward to welcoming you on this day.

For the winter semester 2026 this will take place on Monday, September 7, 2026:

• 10.00 a.m.            Presentation of the degree program and university facilities
• 11.45 a.m.            Start of the campus tour
• 1.30 - 4.30 p.m.  Precourse Programming (optional)

Location: The room C12-3.04 is located in Grenzstr. 3 on the campus of Kiel UAS (Building 12).

Programming is an essential part of the Master's degree program in Data Science. However, experience has shown that the relevant prior knowledge varies depending on the previous field of study or professional experience. For this reason, a 3-day pre-course programming course will be offered between September 7, 8 and 9 2026. The aim of the course is to impart basic knowledge of programming with Python and thus enable all students of the Master's degree program in Data Science to start their studies successfully.

• Please bring your private laptop. You will install open source software and do all exercises on your laptop.
• As a registered student, you will have WiFi access on campus. You can set up WiFi access via the Eduroam instructions.

The first important event for students in the Data Science master’s program is the first-semester orientation. We look forward to welcoming you on that day.

For this reason, a 3-day introductory programming course will be offered between September 7 and 9, 2026. The course aims to provide basic knowledge of programming in Python, thereby enabling all students in the Master’s program in Data Science to get off to a successful start in their studies.

Practical Information:

• Please bring your own laptop. You will install open-source software and complete all exercises on your laptop.
• As a registered student, you have Wi-Fi access on campus. You can set up your Wi-Fi connection initially by following these instructions.

• The moodle page "Data Science Information Hub" is the central place for information and internal exchange for all students and professors of the Data Science degree program. There you will find up-to-date information on important dates, job offers, master's theses and other aspects relevant to your studies.
• All students of the Data Science Master's program are required to register in the Data Science Information Hub and to remain registered there for the duration of their studies. You will get access credentials at study start (Email, Welcome Event, ...) or ask any of the lecturers.
