Brief description
As a DC/DC converter stack already exists in the military sector, the basic idea of the project is to use this converter as a platform to develop a hangable subsystem. This innovative, integrated and scalable DC/DC converter is being developed in collaboration with thyssenkrupp Marine Systems for the maritime fuel cell. The efficiency of the fuel cell and the DC/DC converter is crucial for the entire propulsion system. The robustness of the overall system in the maritime environment must be ensured. On the electrical side, the system consists of a newly developed, highly efficient DC/DC converter based on the new gallium nitride semiconductor.
A key objective is the feasibility of a scalable system up to the MW range. The aim is to achieve a very high degree of integration with the use of planar transformers as well as thermal-mechanical optimization, taking into account central cooling of the fuel cell and DC/DC converter The membranes of fuel cells are a factor that determines their service life, so they will probably have to be replaced regularly. The full integration of fuel cell and electrical converter basically enables the health status of the fuel cell and these membranes to be assessed via the DC/DC converter. Fundamental feasibility studies should be carried out for this purpose.
