Science Comes to Town 2026

HAW Kiel is a partner
of Science Comes to Town

Making research and innovation tangible in everyday life - that is the aim of the European initiative "Science Comes to Town", which was first announced by the European Union in 2026. In cooperation with its partner cities Brest in France and Split in Croatia, the state capital Kiel applied to host the event and was awarded the contract.

People in and around the three cities can look forward to more than 1,000 activities this year, which will bring them closer to the everyday, political and economic relevance of scientific findings, promote dialog between science and society and thus strengthen confidence in science.

"We are delighted that the contract for the new EU initiative Science Comes to Town has been awarded to the state capital Kiel and its partner cities Brest and Split and that our university is an associated partner," says HAW President Prof. Dr. Björn Christensen. "This gives us and all participating institutions the unique opportunity to provide citizens with insights into our research in a variety of ways for an entire year and to enter into dialog with each other."

A wide-ranging program

As a partner of the EU project, HAW Kiel is involved in the program in a variety of ways.

The children's university kicks off the program. On three dates in spring, children between the ages of 8 and 14 will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in fascinating scientific issues at HAW Kiel.

Prof. Dr. Katrin Mahllkow-Nerge from the Department of Agricultural Economics kicked things off in January with the child-friendly lecture "The nature of the cow - understanding cows better".

It continues on February 18 with the question "Band-aid or ambulance? When and why does a small electric shock tingle? And why can a large electric shock be dangerous?" with Prof. Dr. Kay Schmidt-Rethmeier from the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Tickets are free of charge and can be reserved online.

Then on March 18 , it's "Robots and ice?! Sounds crazy - but it's really cool! We take a curious look at what robots can do and why they even experiment with ice" with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Finkemeyer from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Each event starts at 2 pm.

In the fall, the children's university will continue on October 7, November 4 and December 9 at Christian-Albrechts-Universität.
