Improving study opportunities for refugees
Brief description
For many years now, there has been a continuous flow of refugees from third countries to the EU and Germany, forcing people to leave their home countries. This includes many students and those wishing to study, who cannot easily take up or continue their studies in Germany. Particularly in view of the lack of skilled workers in Germany, it is important not only to train refugees with suitable programs, but also to integrate them socially and culturally and to create a connection for integration into the job market even after graduation. The aim is to offer prospective students sustainable prospects and to train skilled workers who are needed both in the Schleswig-Holstein region and in the event of a possible return to their home country.
Three main target groups with different characteristics have been defined for this purpose. Students with a school-leaving certificate that entitles them to study in their home country, but who first need to attend a preparatory college in Germany, students with a university entrance qualification who have already studied and are allowed to study in Germany from a professional point of view, but who often lack German language skills in order to be integrated into the predominantly German-language degree programs at HAW Kiel, and students with a refugee background who are already studying in Germany, but who need further qualifications (e.g. technical language, project-oriented learning) in order to integrate into their studies abroad, whose learning culture differs considerably from that of their home country.e.g. technical language, project-oriented work, etc.).
The following measures are implemented in order to pave the way for these people to study and to build up knowledge and skills with suitable measures that enable them to take up a course of study both formally and in terms of subject and language:
- Counselling at the International Office on study paths or alternative educational options.
- Language courses at B2 and C1 level through the Center for Languages and Intercultural Competence (ZSIK).
- Studienkolleg with an extended range of courses to prepare students for their studies.
- Mentoring programme, organized by the Diversity Officer, to support social and cultural integration.
