Functionally Graded Materials for Resource-Efficient Mold Temperature Control

Brief Description

The use of graded metal composites in injection molding tools is intended to achieve customized thermal conductivity while ensuring a wear-resistant tool surface. This is intended to prevent warpage and hot spots and to reduce cycle time. For mold manufacturing, a new temperature control concept for injection molds is to be developed through the use of graded materials. The core of the project is to use additive manufacturing to develop graded metal composites as a solution for use in tool and mold making and to experimentally validate the product properties. The use of graded materials enables new tooling concepts, particularly for applications that require intensive, high-precision temperature control of the cavity. For example, the use of such materials in injection molds for the production of amorphously solidified PET preforms holds great promise. The optimizations sought in the project address the FDWF’s focus areas, such as efficiency, energy savings, and carbon footprint.
